To know the availability of the expired domain, you must understand the domain and its different status. It is very easy to find out the particular domain's status by entering "whois domain's name" into search engine.
There is different status of domain name like:
Registry-lock: The domain name with the status "Registry-lock cannot be modified or removed by the registrar. It is possible to renew this type of domain name.
Registry-hold: The domain name with the status "Registry-hold" cannot be modified or removed by the registrar. That means it is not possible to change or modified the domain without first deleting or removing the "Registry-hold status. Removing or changing of "Registry-hold status is done by registry only. It is possible to renew this type of domain name.
Active: When anyone registered a new domain, then the domain name has a default setting of "Active" status. The domain with active status can be modified or changed by the registrar. It is possible to renew this type of domain name.
Apart from this there is a "Registrar-lock," "Registrar-hold" and "Registry-delete-notify" status also. When the domain name is expired, its status become "Registry-delete-notify"
Redemption period
When a particular domain name has expired beyond the 'Add grace period', the registrar requests it to put under the redemption period. It is not possible to modify the domain name that has a status of redemption period. Only thing the Registrar can do to a domain which is in redemption period is, request registry to restore the domain name. At present the Redemption period is set to 30 days.
When the domain name reaches the end of the redemption period status, the domain name is then transferred to pending-delete status. If there is no action from original registrar of the particular domain name within five days in the pending-delete status the domain name will be available to anyone.
